Advent
Well Advent is now upon us and everywhere the world seems to be already blazing with Christmas Cheer. But it's important that we give Advent its proper time and place. At St Michael's this week I talked about a prayer that was in our liturgy that sums up what Advent is all about: O Lord our God, make us watchful and keep us faithful as we await the coming of your Son our Lord; that, when he shall appear, he may not find us sleeping in sin but active in his service and joyful in his praise; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Keep us Watchful: watchful that Christ will come again one day, and we have to be ready. Keep us Faithful: we have to be faithful to the task God has given us, helping him to build his kingdom. We haven't to sleepwalk into things that distract us from what God has given us to do. Active in Service: that means loving our neighbours, standing up for the poor. Fighting injustice.. Joyful in Praise: we shouldn't be glum faced. We should keep on praising the God almighty for all be has done for us.
